The peak of Imari porcelain exports coincided with the Baroque and Rococo eras in Europe when there was a fervor for opulent decorations and an affinity for exotic Eastern styles. Many monarchs vied to amass collections of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, sparking a trend that swept across Europe.
伊萬里瓷器外銷的鼎盛期,正逢歐洲追求豪華裝飾的巴洛克與洛可可時代,喜愛帶東方風情的裝飾風格,許多君王競相收藏中國與日本瓷器,在歐洲掀起一股流行。

After 1670, Japanese Imari porcelain gave rise to distinctive styles known as "Kakiemon" and "Kinrande," characterized by their vibrant colors. These porcelain styles gained immense popularity in European markets, solidifying Japan's reputation as a prominent porcelain producer in the crossroads between Europe and Asia.
西元1670年以後,日本伊萬里瓷器發展出獨特的「柿右衛門樣式」與「金襴手樣式」,色彩斑斕,大受歐洲市場歡迎,日本瓷器當時在歐亞之間聲譽斐然。

In the early days, Japan Arita Imari porcelain was primarily characterized by its blue and white designs. It wasn't until the 1640s that the renowned Sakaida Kakiemon family, inspired by Chinese porcelain techniques learned from Imari merchants, successfully pioneered colored porcelain in Japan. They created intricate patterns on a creamy white background using a palette of five colors, giving birth to what is now known as the "Kakiemon style."
日本有田燒製的伊萬里瓷器初期以青花為主,直至1640年代,名工酒井田柿右衛門家,依照伊萬里商賈向中國人習得的彩瓷技術,成功創燒日本的彩瓷,以五彩在乳白色地上繪飾細緻的紋樣,稱為「柿右衛門樣式」。

During Japan's Genroku era (1688-1704) at the end of the 17th century, wealthy merchants and nobility became enamored with the popular Jingdezhen porcelain from the 16th century, which featured gold accents on a polychrome background. This renewed interest prompted Arita to once again create the "Kinrande style," with lavish use of gold decoration.
到了十七世紀末的日本元祿年間(1688-1704),豪商、貴族著迷於盛行於十六世紀、在五彩上加飾金彩的景德鎮金襴手瓷器,促使有田再度創燒了伊萬里「金襴手樣式」。

From the 1650s onwards, Japanese porcelain started its export journey to Southeast Asia. By the 1660s, it had made its way to Europe through the Dutch East India Company, featuring a wide range of everyday items such as medicine bottles, spice jars, teapots, cups, and saucers, as well as large vases and jars used for architectural embellishments.
西元1650年代起,日本瓷器先是外銷東南亞,到了1660年代則透過荷蘭東印度公司正式銷售歐洲,內容包括藥瓶、調味罐、執壺、杯盤組等各色日用器,以及用於建築裝飾的大瓶、大罐等。

To cater to the demands of the European export market, artisan potters from Hasen created a distinctive line of tableware that differs from what is traditionally used in Japan. This special collection includes versatile platters with foldable edges for easy cutting, lidded bowls for serving soups, as well as condiment jars, beer mugs, coffee pots, cocoa cups, and more, all crafted in the style of European metalware or low-temperature ceramics, transformed into Imari porcelain.
配合外銷歐洲的市場需求,有田陶工透過特製,燒造有別於日本境內使用的宴席食具,像方便使用刀刃的折沿大盤、盛湯的蓋碗以及調味料瓶、啤酒罐、咖啡壺、可可杯等,都是模仿歐洲習用的金屬或低溫陶器,轉換為伊萬里瓷器。

During that era, European royalty and nobility placed significant orders to Japan for sets of five indoor decorative vases and large jars, as well as Imari porcelain adorned with oriental charm featuring sumo figurines. These exquisite pieces were used to adorn alcoves, walls, ceilings, and more.
當時歐洲的王公貴族們向日本有田大量訂購五件套組的室內裝飾大壺與大罐,以及充滿東方風情的相撲人像等伊萬里瓷器,用以裝飾壁龕、牆面、天花板等。

Today, you can find traces of Imari porcelain in prominent European landmarks such as Charlottenburg Palace in Germany, Neuschwanstein Castle, Burghley House in the United Kingdom, Palace of Versailles in France, and Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands.
這些作品在今日的德國夏洛滕堡宮、新天鵝堡,英國伯利莊園、法國凡爾賽宮以及荷蘭海牙和平宮等,都有伊萬里瓷器的蹤跡。

Comparing "Japanese Imari porcelain" with "Chinese Jingdezhen porcelain", there are differences in body, glaze and molding methods, but Arita porcelain in the mid-17th century is very similar to Chinese products.
日本伊萬里瓷器和中國景德鎮瓷器相比較,在胎、釉及成型方法上都有差異,但17世紀中葉的有田瓷器與中國產品則十分相近。

In the early 1610s, in the region of Arita in Kyushu, Japan, ceramic artisans built upon the techniques of Korean potters to create the country's first porcelain wares. Arita porcelain initially emulated the Chinese blue and white ceramics and later incorporated overglaze enameling techniques.
1610年代左右,九州有田一帶,以朝鮮陶工的技術為基礎,成功燒製了日本最初之瓷器。有田瓷器先是模仿中國的青花,其後也吸收了釉上彩之技法。

Once the Japanese potters had mastered their techniques, they ventured into crafting blue and white porcelain. Drawing inspiration from pattern books and physical examples, they emulated the designs of Chinese Jingdezhen ceramics, with the most renowned being the "Kraak style," which found great favor in European markets.

In the latter half of the 17th century, China imposed maritime trade restrictions. To fill the void left by Jingdezhen ceramics, Arita porcelain began to be exported abroad, often departing from the nearby Imari Port. This is why it became known as Imari porcelain.
十七世紀後半,中國發布海禁,為替補景德鎮瓷器空缺,有田瓷器開始銷往海外, 由於多從附近的伊萬里港出口,因此又名伊萬里瓷。
